Well, it aborts with a fatal error. To make it easier to diagnose an
unexpected fatal error a core is left.

I agree that leaving a core in trivial cases like configuration errors is
maybe not needed, but at the same time it takes developer resources to
make only these fatal errors "less fatal" and this is not a task any of
the developers have seen as even remotely important to have implemented.
