On a Linux server we are running squid-2.5.4 on, the file desciptor max limit is currently set to 1024. I looked at cachemgr.cgi's Process Filedescriptor Allocation and see that the servers highest used FD ranges around 860 or so.

Given that peak usage may bump this up even closer to the 1024 range, is it reccomended to raise the FD max to a higher number? And would defaulting this number to 2048 or 4096 put excessive unneeded strain on system resources if the value was too high after all?
