Hi,
   Thanks for the response. 
   We have a firewall running but there is no policy
that has been added for the loopback interface.
   Squid is being started as root and the the
cache_effective_user is the default user 'nobody'.
Changing it to 'root' threw a fatal error.
   Kindly elaborate on what the problem could be.
