Thanks for the info. I thought that it might be the case that you had to have root for port 443. Squid does start out. I configured it to not use port 3128 because I only want the standard SSL port available.

Privileged ports (below 1024) are only accessible for 'root'. However usually Squid binds to port 3128 and not 443. Could also be something else. What else is in the logs? Does squid start up at all?
