Thanks. I suppose I do not need to rebuild the cache (./squid -z). But what makes you conclude that "FreeBSD diskd is the better choice. Under Solaris and Linux use aufs."?

  The choice is OS dependend : under FreeBSD diskd is the better choice.
  Under Solaris and Linux use aufs.
