Deploying a local caching nameserver is mentioned in several performance howtos (after setting up the ipcache the right way of course).
This also helps, but if your DNS server is on the local LAN and not (very) overloaded the difference is minimal.
If you are running an transparent proxy then there is great benefit from having Squid ask the same DNS server as the clients, either directly, or as forwarder from a local caching dns.
