It works in both accelerator and proxy mode, but it (Squid-2.5) will only forward the credentials in the same mode as received..
What this means is that if your Squid is configured as an accelerator then it will forward the username using the web server Authorization header, if configured as a proxy then using the Proxy-Authorization header.
