Ok - just purged samba, squid and dependent packages - after making copies of the configs of course. :-) Upgraded the remaining packages for Debian testing and reinstalled samba squid etc. After redoing the configs and restarting the necessary server programs cache.log is pleasingly quiet. That said, it's Saturday morning and the load is rather low at the moment. I'll post again if there is any reappearance of the errors quoted above. Thanks, David.
