More likely you have a broken client.
Try "client_persistent_connections off". Works around most broken clients.
I have squid 2.5st7 and I use ldap authentication. Interesting is that when i don't use authentication, the problem disapears.
You are using MSIE right? What you describe is a known bug in some MSIE versions.
