Ah. Right!

* Upgrade to the latest squid-2.6; just make sure you've changed whatever
  transparent webcache / acceleration options you have since they've changed in 
2.6.

* Compile using --enable-epoll under Linux, or --enable-kqueue under FreeBSD.
  I think you mentioned you were running Linux.

You should notice a definite drop in CPU usage.
