It does seem to work with the following options:

curl -v -x 192.168.1.97:800 --proxy-ntlm --proxy-user
"DOMAINNAME\\username:password"  http://www.google.com/

The -v reveals the details of the NTLM authentication headers.

I'll let you know if I get any further.
