On the page you link to, there is "Setup a chain DIVERT to mark packets":
iptables -t mangle -N DIVERT
iptables -t mangle -A DIVERT -j MARK --set-mark 1
iptables -t mangle -A DIVERT -j ACCEPT
Did you run these lines before?
