From the description of the problem it sounds like the other FAQ: permissions issues. When run from the commandline it behaves correctly but when run from squid no logs and it fails sounds like it's going into emergency mode cause it can't write the logs directory or read the .db's. Can someone give me a URL for the FAQ re db3.x? It might help to explain some of the weird stuff that's been going on here ...
