Well now I'm getting really confused! Yup - I'm still struggling with this.

I've tried uninstalling the RPM and re-installing from scratch (I think
the RPM I have is the same as Fajar's) and still no joy. I have also
tried using a Webmin Module ( from here :
http://www.niemueller.de/webmin/modules/squidguard/) which makes the
set-up easier.

The funny thing is - prior to uninstalling the Webmin module seemed to
be able to work with my squidGuard (even though it still wouldn't
function properly with squid) In other words I could set up acl rules,
download blacklists and activate them etc.

Now - after the reinstall - Webmin flatly refuses to accept the path to
the directory that I have set up for the blacklists (although it is
happy with the path to the logfile). I am wondering if this is pointing
to my problem. The ownership and permissions of the db file is exactly
the same as for the logfile but still Webmin won't accept it.

Maybe I'm being really dumb here - but is the Berkeley DB necessary to
*run* squidGuard - or is it only required if compiling from source?

As far as I know I am not actually using any .db files - my blacklists
are text files (I think).

If I do:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# locate berkeley
/usr/bin/berkeley_db42_svc
/usr/bin/berkeley_db_svc
/usr/bin/berkeley_db41_svc
/usr/share/doc/db4-utils-4.3.27/utility/berkeley_db_svc.html
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]#

I guess this means I have version 4.3.27 ? (and 4.1 and 4.2)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# /usr/bin/berkeley_db_svc -V
Sleepycat Software: Berkeley DB 4.3.27: (April 25, 2005)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]#

Do I need to install version 3.2.9 (as described here :
http://www.maynidea.com/squidguard/step-by-step.html) from source?

Can it co-exist with the above versions or will it wipe them out?

If squidguard does need 3.2.9 to run, and if I can install it, how do I
tell squidguard which version to use?

Sorry for all the questions - I hope I'm making progress...

Thanks again.

Mark
