is in 2.2.7 and is works with Squid2.5, so I use that.

I install 2.2.x for all the server
functions. The net utility from 3.0 is just too handy to do without
though, l build (but don't install) 3.0 just for the net command. It's
self-contained and does not need the entire 3.0 suite installed to be
useful.
The same should be doable with rpcclient and/or
wbinfo if you don't want to have any 3.0 components on the box.

I use the "net" command from Samba 3.0.
It is the only component I use from 3.0, but is very handy:
/usr/local/bin/net rap groupmember
list GROUPNAME \
-U NTUSERNAME%NTPASSWORD -S PDCSERVER
