SFAI: A Lecture by TANIA BRUGUERA, Installation/Performance Artist 2/20/02 7:30 pm $6 public; $4 seniors, stdnts, disabld; SFAI student free ----> Event Description <----------------------------------------------- A tea party at SFAI McBean Gallery will occur before the lecture, at 6 pm. During her semester-long residency at the San Francisco Art Institute, Cuban artist Tania Bruguera will exhibit the West Coast premiere of her video installation, �La isla en peso (Island Burden)� recently shown at the Venice Biennial, and a new, commissioned installation/performance project involving the rituals inherent in the drinking of tea. Both the exhibition and the project run through May 10. Tania Bruguera�s work in performance and installation responds to her cultural environment, whether that relationship concerns art and power in Cuba; emigration as a phenomenon which has affected Cuban culture and life; memory; the context surrounding the artist�s moment of creation; and, more recently, guilt. Her work attempts to fuse that which is strictly personal and intimate with the collective and social. Ritual is the main process by which she creates art, from the selection of materials, through the development of the idea, to the moment when it reaches its most potent state. During her residency, Bruguera will also take part in the F-Word project, a Bay Area series of events and lectures on feminism, March 3 � 9, 2002.
