THE CHINESE NEW YEAR'S TREASURE HUNT
A four hour exploration of San Francisco's hidden treasures
The Chinese New Year's Treasure Hunt is a game of urban exploration and
discovery played on the colorful streets of San Francisco's Chinatown,
North Beach, and Telegraph Hill. A thousand amateur sleuths explore obscure
alleys and hidden lanes solving clues created by local private eye Jayson
Wechter.
Treasure hunters seek out obscure landmarks, forgotten architectural
delights, secret views and vestiges of San Francisco's colorful past (and
present). They walk the same streets once trod by adventure-seeking 49ers,
Barbary Coast pleasure-seekers, 19th century silver barons, and writers
like Dashiell Hammett, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, and Jack
Kerouac, who gave San Francisco its special literary flavor. They discover
some of the rich history and cultural fabric of the city's diverse and
exotic neighborhoods as they visit sites few tourists, and many residents,
never even notice.
The hunt is conducted entirely on foot and is followed by an awards
ceremony where winning teams receive bottles of champagne, award
certificates, and the right to gloat. Proceeds benefit Hamilton Family
center, which provides shelter and support services for homeless families
in San Francisco.
