Robert Cohen, Author Inspired Sleep, To Appear in SF at Author Series Friday, February 22nd 7PM-9PM FREE ----> Event Description <----------------------------------------------- Robert Cohen, Pushcart Prize-Winning Author of Inspired Sleep and The Varieties of Romantic Experience, To Appear in San Francisco at Thought Magazine Author Series San Francisco, California� At 7:00 pm on February 22 at the literary-themed Hotel Rex (562 Sutter Street), Thought Magazine will present Berkeley-based author Robert Cohen, author of the newly released short story collection, The Varieties of Romantic Experience (Scribner, February 2002), and novel, Inspired Sleep (2001 Notable Book of The Year by The New York Times). During the seventh event of the Thought Magazine Author Series, along with discussing his two new books and the themes associated with them, Cohen will speak about his life as an award-winning author. For the author lecture series, which provides a literary salon atmosphere, The Hotel Rex�s restaurant lobby bar will be open for drinks and light food. Books will be available for sale and signing after the event, which will conclude with an audience question and answer session. Robert Cohen is the author of two other novels novels, The Organ Builder and The Here and Now. His work has been awarded a Whiting Writer�s Award, a Lila Wallace-Reader�s Digest Writer�s Award, The Ribalow Prize and the Pushcart Prize, and has appeared in a wide variety of publications, including Harpers, GQ, The Paris Review, Atlantic Unbound, and Ploughshares. The San Francisco Chronicle says Cohen�s Inspired Sleep (Vintage Contemporaries, 2002) �[Manages] to remain grounded in the everyday while indulging in stylistic richness,� also adding, �Cohen�s brittle commentary on the current scene is worth receiving in bulk.� The New Yorker equally praised Inspired Sleep, saying it is �Smartly observed and stylishly written�crammed with incidental pleasures.� In this hugely entertaining and proactive work of fiction, Ian Ogelvie and Bonnie Saks are drawn together by an experimental drug�he as researcher, she as test subject. Bonnie is lucky if she gets four consecutive hours of shuteye, what with her responsibilities as a single mother of two (soon to be three) and a frustrated academic. When she joins Ian�s test group, the question remains whether enhanced REM sleep will save the day. With a keen, panoramic eye, Robert Cohen explores everything from the slippery evasions of love to the intricate network that binds together the pharmaceutical industry, managed care, and a shadow population of lost, sleepless souls. Says the New York Times Book Review: �Inspired Sleep is inspired all the way to its unexpected and clever conclusion. Inevitably, there is no cure for the human condition. There are, however, novels like this one, which come as close as we may get to making it sublime.� Coinciding with Vintage�s paperback publication of Inspired Sleep, Scribner will publish The Varieties of Romantic Experience, ten stories that effectively showcase this author�s exquisite prose and startling humor. Together they further reveal Cohen�s virtuoso range of tone and style. �Oscillations� is a funny and provocative story about a man verbally paralyzed by his obsession with language, who must retreat to a language institute to re-learn how to communicate. In the masterful title story, a stuffy college professor inadvertently tells his class about his own humiliating molestation of his former teaching assistant. �Points of View� is about the boundaries between life and art, told through points of view of three characters. Long compared to Philip Roth and Saul Bellow, Robert Cohen has clearly emerged as a popular writer with a voice recognizably and indisputably his own. The goal of Thought Magazine, a non-profit, semi-annual literary journal, and its free Author Speaker Series, which features authors of newly released books, is to spread Thought Magazine�s love of writing, and to establish a community of authors and readers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The series of eleven events runs from January to the end of March, with a list of authors including Roy Parvin (March 8) and Jonathan Kaplan (March 13). All events are held at 7 pm at the Hotel Rex. Found in bookstores throughout the Bay Area, Thought Magazine is comprised of poetry, fiction, and essays by authors around the globe. The next issue to be released in April, features an interview with 2001 National Book Award finalist Dan Chaon, author of Among the Missing, and Ron Carlson, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year Award.
