Human Rights Watch International Film Festival 2/22-2/24 Vary: 6pm Fri, 2pm Sat, 3pm Sun $7 ----> Event Description <----------------------------------------------- The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival (http://www.hrw.org/iff/) is returning to the PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE (http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/pfa/index.html) for its second year, February 22-24. The festival will screen the following nine films: MISSING YOUNG WOMAN Friday, February 22, 7:00pm, filmmaker present Bay area filmmaker Lourdes Portillo investigates why over two hundred young women have disappeared from the streets of Juaraz, Mexico since 1994. Won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance 2002. DETAINED Friday, February 22, 9:00pm The film follows three Palestinian widows and their eleven children as they attempt to live a normal life, trapped in a house situated directly on the border between Israel and the West Bank, two sides eternally at war. Directors, Anat Even and Ada Ushpiz, two Israeli women, entered these women's homes to present their story and to capture their courage. Jung (War): In The Land Of the Mujaheddin, Saturday, February 23, 2:00pm, filmmaker present The film provides a penetrating look at survival amidst civil war, as an Italian surgeon and a war correspondent join forces in 1999-2000 to set up a hospital in war-ravaged Afghanistan. Filmmakers Fabrizio Lazzaretti, Giuseppe Petitto, and Alberto Vendemmiati returned to film in Afghanistan in the wake of the September terrorist attacks and will be present at the screening to talk about their experience as well as show excerpts from their new work in progress on Afghanistan. 2001 winner of the HRWIFF's Nestor Almendros Prize Behind Closed Eyes Saturday, February 23, 6:00pm Beautifully rendered filmmaking that tells the tragic and triumphant stories of four war-scarred children: an orphaned Cambodian boy who lost a leg to a landmine; a Kosovar refugee; a former Liberian child soldier, and a teenage Rwandan mother who was raped during the war; all of whom triumph over their pasts and learn to rebuild their lives. Children Underground Saturday, February 23, 8:00pm Filmmaker Edet Belzberg introduces the audience to five members of a �family�Eof orphaned, abandoned and runaway children living in a Bucharest subway station. They survive by begging, stealing food and getting high. Stunning verite scenes anchor this 2001 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature. 2001 Sundance Special Jury Prize for Documentary and 2001 IDA (International Documentary Association) Award Nominee Promises Sunday, February 24, 3:00pm, filmmaker present Tells the story of seven Israeli and Palestinian children. The film offers a dramatic, touching and sometimes hilarious insight into the Middle East conflict and growing up in Jerusalem. Local filmmaker Carlos Bolado will be in attendance for discussion following the screening. 2001 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Ralph Bunche: An American Odyssey Sunday, February 24, 5:40pm. William Greaves's compelling documentary, narrated by Sidney Poitier, will help to restore the profile of this important and fascinating American that has faded from public consciousness in the 30 years since his death. He was a Middle East peacemaker, United Nations statesman, crusader for de- colonization and human rights and the 1950 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. THE JAHALIN Sunday, February 24, 8:00pm An Israeli woman documents the collision of cultures between a group of Bedouins �Ethe proud nomadic tribes-people of Palestine, and Jewish settlers who are ready to take advantage of their lack of land deeds and papers to build their subdivisions. NAZARETH 2000 Sunday February 24, 8:40pm (following The Jahalin) Nazareth portrays a topic recently in the headlines. The Israeli government is currently halting the construction of a mosque next to a large Christian basilica in Nazareth. Christian leaders, locally and abroad, oppose the project, threatening to re-ignite the dispute that led to violence between Muslims and Christians in the city in 1999. Director Hany Abu Assad deftly uses humor to tell the story of the conflict to claim the town square in his hometown, sacred to both Christians and Muslims, on the eve of the millennium. Two cynical and wise gas station attendants offer their shrewd insights into the people, the issues and their city.
