----> Event Description <-----------------------------------------------

66balmy, an art gallery dedicated to supporting and celebrating
contemporary art of all kinds, is pleased to announce the closing reception
for Luminaire - showcasing the works of Gage Opdenbrouw, a Bay Area
painter, and Xavier Damon, a French photographer. The closing reception is
scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 6 to 10 pm.

Although their individual media and processes are very different, the
paintings of Opdenbrouw, and the photographs of Damon share a deep affinity
in their sumptuous use of light and color. Both artists approach
recognizable imagery in an essentially abstract fashion, transforming our
experience of seemingly everyday objects or places. Both artists consider
emotions as an inner landscape, with an ambition to enrich our perceptions
of our world and ourselves.

Living in the Bay Area for the past two years, Xavier Damon hails
originally from Paris. Damon's photography has its roots in the Polaroid
or Kodamatic instant camera format, which he then enlarges. While
preserving the format of the original Polaroid print, the final work is
mounted on aluminum. Many of Damon's images have an inevitable quality
that places them hovering solidly between dreams and reality.

Recipient of the "Best Emerging Artist, Painting, 2001" award from San
Francisco's Academy of Art College, Opdenbrouw's work parallels that of
Damon in it's focus on our emotions and inner states and spaces, however,
it does so in the form of recognizable landscapes. Painted from memory or
from the imagination, Opdenbrouw's work evokes emotion through its
seductive use of oil paint and rich color. Moving in a continuum with
Turner at one end and Rothko at the other, Opdenbrouw's vision encompasses
the serene and violent, the subtle and dramatic.

The exhibit will be open for viewing from February 7 to March 4. The
closing reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 6:00 to 10:00
p.m. The Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday.
