Tuesday, March 5th at 7:30 pm ANN BANNON: I AM A WOMAN Lauded as the "Queen of Lesbian Pulp" for her landmark novels of the 1950s, Ann Bannon defined lesbian fiction for the pre-Stonewall generation. Following the release of Cleis Press new editions of Beebo Brinker and Odd Girl Out, I Am a Woman finds sorority sister Laura Landon leaving college heartbreak behind and embracing Greenwich Village's lesbian bohemia. Ann Bannon is the author of the classic lesbian pulp novels Women in the Shadows and Journey to a Woman. She lives in Sacramento, CA. Thursday, March 7that 7:30 pm RELA MAZALI: MAPS OF WOMEN'S GOINGS AND COMINGS In Maps of Women's Goings and Stayings, Rela Mazali looks at women's ability to take themselves from place to place, viewing space and spatial freedom as deeply gendered in modern Western cultures. She constructs an imagined yet movement-nurturing home space. This cannot be accomplished, however, without a compelling, painful look at the patriarchal, colonial, and militarized structures underpinning all Western travel, women's emancipatory journeys included--a look influenced by the still-colonial structure of the author's Israeli placement. Rela Mazali is an Israeli writer, and a leader of the New Profile Movement to de-militarize Israeli society. Tuesday, March 12th at 7:30 pm JOSEPH NEVINS: OPERATION GATEKEEPER In 1994, the INS launched Operation Gatekeeper, the Clinton administration's drastic effort to regain control of the U.S.-Mexico border. However, even as miles of new fence and hundreds of trained agents were added, the border was enjoying unprecedented economic growth. As Joseph Nevins details in Operation Gatekeeper, the effort has failed to significantly reduce unauthorized border crossings, but has undoubtedly resulted in hardship, and sometimes death, for many unauthorized border crossings, but has undoubtedly resulted in hardship, and sometimes death, for many unauthorized crossers. With a journalist's eye for detail, Nevins provides an immensely readable account of what has become an increasingly central concern for developed nations: keeping Third World immigrants out. Joseph Nevins is currently a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. His writing has appeared in The Nation, The Progressive, and many other publications. Wednesday, March 13th at 7:30 DANIEL BURTON ROSE: THE BATTLE OF SEATTLE From Washington, D.C. to the party conventions and on to Prague, Cancun, and Geneva, the new movement against capitalist globalization continues to grow. The Battle of Seattle roots these events globally in an anti- capitalist history: the resistance to the IMF and the neo-liberal project in Venezuela, Korea, and Chiapas, the mass organizing campaigns of the nuclear-freeze movement in the 1980s, and the innovative direct action tactics of environmentalists in the US. In this volume, activists and thinkers ask the question on the collective mind of the movement: What happens to non-violent tactics in an environment of increasingly ruthless policing? How can a predominantly white activist scene in the US and Europe form productive allegiances with activists of color? Battle invites readers to join the intensive debates within the anti-globalization movement and to make some history of their own. Co-editor Daniel Burton Rose (The Celling of America) will read, along with contributors Jeffrey Perlstein, co- founder of the Independent Media Center in Seattle and Indymedia.org, and current executive Director at Media Alliance, as well as Colin Rahaj, program director at JustAct in San Francisco. Thursday, March 14th at 7:30 pm LUCIE OCEANUS: THE UNSAVVY TRAVELER The Unsavvy Traveler collects the hilarious and cathartic misadventure tales of women whose dreams of idyllic journeys fell by the roadside. In stories guaranteed to delight one's inner agoraphobia, writers reveal their struggles with petty thieves and jungle floods, surly bears and insane turkeys, irate mobs and temperamental nudists. Co-editor Lucie Oceanus will moderate tonight's reading, which will include contributing writers Lea Aschkenas, Nancy Cooper Frank, Julie Gerk, and Millie Org. Friday, March 15th at 4:00 pm MICHAEL PERRY: DANIEL'S RIDE Mission author and all around creative force Michael Perry returns for a second reading from Daniel's Ride, an edgy, beautifully illustrated children's book that captures the excitement and pride of a kid in the passenger's seat of his big brother's custom '63 Impala low rider. Artist Lee Ballard's fiery oil paintings bring the book to life, and there's even a glossary for those who don't understand the Spanish/Spanglish slang sprinkled throughout. Perry, who describes himself as a creative control freak, founded Free Will Press to bring Daniel's Ride to print. Committed to creating tales aimed at urban kids, Free Will Press's second title, Turn Table Timmy, is due out in the fall. Perry's no novice at making culture happen: in the late eighties/early nineties Perry was a part the rap group D.F.T.C. (Down For the Cause), and founded the indie label Revolt Records. Michael Perry lives in San Francisco with his wife and two daughters. Tuesday, March 19th at 7: 30 pm MELANIE FRIEND: NO PLACE LIKE HOME: ECHOES FROM KOSOVO British photojournalist Melanie Friend has covered the Balkans since 1989. Well before Kosovo began to make headlines, Friend was gripped by the region, whose autonomy was revoked by the government of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic that same year. In 1999, as NATO bombs fell on Serbia and ethnic Albanians fled Kosovo, Friend was shooting portraits in the refugee camps of Macedoniathe very type of photographs she had longed to make but could not so long as her subjects lived under Serbian authority. Now that the Kosovars have returned home, it is the Serbs who fear retribution from the neighbors they thought had been driven out for good. As the centuries-old cycle of abuse enters a new phase, Friend's photographs and extraordinary interviews present to date the most profound, complex and human document of the recent history in the Balkans. Wednesday, March 20th at 7:30 pm READING GROUP: RIGHTEOUS VICTIMS Join the Modern Times community-led monthly reading group and educate yourself on issues surrounding the current War on Terrorism, U.S. foreign policy in Afghanistan and the Middle East, the politics and histories of these regions, the roots of fundamentalism, and other related topics. This month we'll read the second half of Benny Morris's Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict 1881-2001. The group has already read Ahmed Rashid's Taliban and Karen Armstrong's Islam: A Short History. Titles for subsequent months will be determined by the group. Tuesday, March 26th at 7:30 pm 'ALTERNATIVE TO THE OSCARS': AN INDIE PRESS PARTY FOR KAPOW! Juliette Torrez has quickly established a popular line of prose and poetry books that have been illustrated by some of the most popular cartoonists in the comix community. From Steve Weissman and Ivan Brunetti, to Scott Mills and Sam Henderson, to Jordan Crane and Gabby Gamboa, these little text and graphic combos are a unique contribution to the world of comix. Editor/publisher/writer Juliette Torrez will be joined by other Kapow! artists and authors for a night of unrivaled, un-televised entertainment. Wednesday, March 27th at 7:30 pm GLOW IN THE DARK: LISA TEASLEY Glow in the Dark is an edgy collection of short stories set in the disparate locales of New York, Northern California, Los Angeles, Mexico and Paris. Each story drops the reader dead center into the lives of those whose extreme behavior has led them to the threshold of significant transition. With a sharp and finely crafted voice, Teasley enlivens her disparate range of characters, male and female, black and white, straight and gay, young and old. Renowned poet Wanda Coleman compares Glow in the Dark to "the page on a canvas, on which she masterfully renders edgy contemporary mindscapes." Lisa Teasley's work has appeared in publications ranging, including The Great River Review and Between C and D, to name a few. Most recently, Teasley's work has appeared in Step Into A World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature, as well as the best-selling erotica collection, Brown Sugar. Thursday, March 28th at 7:30 pm ISLAMIC LITERATURE READING SERIES: LOVE POETRY For the second installation of our Islamic literature series, local Muslim writers and performers will take a look at love poetry, reading from their own work as well as classical and modern works, including epics like Laila and Mainoon, sufi poetry such as that of Rumi, and contemporary love poems. Series coordinator Tehmina Khan, a well-known local poet, playwright, and essayist, will read, along with other local Muslim writers and a reciter of Urdu poetry. EVENT BOOKS ARE 10% OFF.
