Women Behind Bars is a hilarious "stage Noir" send-up of womens prison
films of the1950s. Its Bad Girls in the Big House in a Big Way, or
Lesbians in Lock-
down. WBB, written by Tom Eyen (DREAMGIRLS) features a cast of 10 women,
played by real women, separated by society by the crimes that they probably
did commit. No archetypes are left out in this over the top production
which had its NY premiere in 1974. Set in The Womens house of Detention in
Greenwich Village, the play involves Mary-Eleanor (Joan Grinde) - "a young
innocent", who is broken down and ultimately befriended by a startling
array of
multi-cultural characters, from Blanche (Dorothy Adams) a Blanche DuBois
"butterfly" to the street-smart Jo-Jo (Shannon West) and the heinous
religious zealot
Granny (Kathryn Trask). Theyre all under the lecherous eye of the tough
matron (Mary Knoll) and theyre ready to rumble. The not-so-subtle hints of
lesbianism in the 50s prison films are brought to the foreground in a way
not -so-subtle manner (the shower scene alone is a classic) in Theatre
Rhinoceros
new production - directed by Russell Blackwood.
The original 1974 off-Broadway production starred Pat Ast as the evil
prison matron Pauline, a role that was later taken over by Divine. Tom Eyen
&Divine
teamed up for a sequel, The Neon Woman, following their success with WBB.
Eyen went on to mainstream success winning multiple awards (including the
Tony) for his book of the musical Dreamgirls. Tom Eyen wrote for MARY
HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN - Norman Lears groundbreaking night time TV
soap, and a string of early musicals for a then unknown Bette Midler
(...and dont you ever forget it!).
Russell Blackwood returns to Theatre Rhino where he last directed Scott
OHaras EX-LOVERS. He also enjoys a decade-long affiliation with the San
Francisco
Shakespeare as a producer, director, and arts education consultant. His
company, Thrillpeddlers, is the only theatre actively engaged in producing
English
adaptations from the notorious Theatre du Grand Guignol. For the past 3
years his Shocktoberfest!, The annual pageant of terror and titillation at
the EXIT
Theatre, has become a staple of San Franciscos Halloween festivities.
After WBB, Blackwood will direct Robinson Jeffers MEDEA for Shotgun Players
