LUMIN presents Majnoon Friday March 15th 9PM-2AM $15 ----> Event Description <----------------------------------------------- San Francisco World Electronica ensemble LUMIN celebrates their signing to Hearts Of Space/World Class Records with a special event and performance at the Somarts Gallery Friday March 15th 9:00pm-2:00am $15 @ the Door A gorgious evening of dance, music and light featuring World Class Artists LUMIN. This is LUMIN's first large-scale event of the year. We will be debuting several new pieces throughout the evening. LUMIN formed in 1998 by Stellamara co-founder and producer Jeffery Stott, and composer Michael Emenau, expands and defines the elements of world electronic music. Featuring the gorgeous vocals of Irina Mikhailova, Lumin brilliantly fuses the ancient and the modern. A stunning live combination of Traditional Instrumentation of the Middle East, drum and bass, Balkan Choir, and down tempo grooves that will satisfy the urban club set as well as the world music aficionado. The event will feature: Lumin (full ensemble) Jeffery Stott- oud, bass, synth, strings, persussion; Michael Emenau-laptop; Irina Mikhailova-vocal; Shea Comfort- mid east wind instruments; and Paulo Baldi and Susana Goldenstein-percussion special guests include: dj MNO michael emenau presents live drum and bass/electro compositions Irina Mikhailova and Dyara womens vocal ensemble Traditional Afro/Slavic vocal music dj Dragonfly- gaiatronic beats founder of the groove garden Romani Dance Troupe Urban Tribal and Traditional Dance of the Middle East Event MC Stephen Hill of Hearts of Space Chai and chaat by chai baaba chai Angelic Aromas Verdant Alters ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ LUMIN is stunning live amalgamation of the traditional music of the Middle East and the Balkans, fused with innovative drum and bass and down tempo grooves that has been performing to rapt festival audiences on the West Coast for the past two years. The group has recently signed to the Hearts of Space label and will be promoted heavily both nationally and internationally throughout the coming year. The ensemble performs a wide range of material in an array of contexts ranging from traditional Turkish, Kurdish and Armenian music, Balkan and Eastern European laments to straight ahead dancefloor material depending on the event and the venue. Instrumentation can include choral vocals, oud, saz, duduk, kaval, violin, darbuka, tabla as well as a full compliment of computers and sound design equipment. LUMIN has been a favorite of National Public Radio since the groups inception with feature programs on Hearts of Space and Echoes. From John Diliberto producer of echoes: The San Francisco Bay Area is a magnet for world music players, and Lumin is another bubble floating up from that global stew. The group is born from another band, called Stellamara with Jeffrey Stott and Michael Emenau. In Lumin, they are joined by singer Irina Mikhailova. Born in Kazakhstan, Mikhailova is an enchantress who wails in a voice that fuses her Kazakh and Russian roots, with eastern European vocal styles and Middle Eastern effects. Sometimes singing in Bulgarian, her native Kazakh, or her own hybrid dialect, she creates the sound of ecstasy and lament, often simultaneously. Mikhailova is surrounded by a kinetic mix of grooves from Emenau, free-wheeling through a rhythmic landscape of electronic sounds and acoustic percussion samples. Stott weaves it all together, playing Middle Eastern oud, hammered dulcimer, and a bowed string & drone instrument called the yali-tambur.
