Gravity Feed Presents
vulnerability
A Creative Perspective of the CollectivEyevulnerability CollectivEyes debut exhibition at the Gravity Feed Gallery
located at 1959 Shattuck in Berkeley at University and Shattuck.
Bay Area collectors and fine art enthusiasts will not want to miss the opportunity
to experience and purchase new ground-breaking work by five local artists at
the opening party for vulnerability, CollectivEyes debut exhibition, on May
22nd, 2004, from 7pm to 11pm. The unveiling of CollectivEyes talent will be
held at the beautiful Gravity Feed Gallery, located at 1959 Shattuck Ave. in
Berkely, and will be shown from 10am to 7pm, Tuesday through Saturday, until
August 20th 2004.
Gravity Feed shows local artists who work in many media. Hand-blown glass is
the one constant, with rotating shows that include paintings, raku and kosai
pottery, photography, electrified titanium and more. James Lane, the Gravity
Feed curator, chooses artists on the basis of the immediate feeling to be taken
from their works and from the artists themselves. I was truly inspired by their
passion and their ability to convey their message visually, says Lane of his
reaction to the CollectivEye artists. These affordable works stimulate you to
think about sensuality, not as only a sexual experience, but as a social critique.
One could easily live with these works and spend years discovering new
expressions of intimacy.
Artists Statement:
The courage to take risks, to show the soft underbelly of our emotional lives, and
to embrace compassion and intimacy on a regular basis takes a leap of faith.
These artworks are a testament to the human desire to express vulnerability,
even in the face of opposition and fear. It is only through the state of being
vulnerable that we can achieve connection, understanding, sincerity, and bliss.
shiloh burtons large scale vivid color photographs of hands represent the
naked state of intimacy, expressing a level of trust, compassion, and humanity
through the experience of touching and being touched. Rysaac Lanes large
scale color prints of condoms convey the delicacy of the material as light passes
through them, creating ephemeral abstract images. Not just formal
compositions, these images also speak to the need for barriers sometimes in an
imperfect world and our desire to connect sexually despite these risks. Paige
Tuheys paintings explore ideas of gender, race, sexual deviancy and
alienation
but not necessarily in that order. Victoria Heilweils large scale
color photographs of roses bring power back to this stereotypical image of love,
and use them to symbolically express the fragile, delicate, and cyclical nature of
that emotional state. Lastly, Brett Fishers large black and white and color
photographs of South Indian women and children speak to the vulnerable
nature of being photographed for the first time. These images represent the
slipperiness of memory.
CollectivEye is a feminist visual artist collective whose mission is to produce
and promote intimate, collaborative, and radical art. Each members unique
vision demonstrates the transformative power of trust. CollectivEye makes art
that speaks to the social-cultural, non hierarchical, consensual exploration of
private places. While CollectivEyes membership is not limited to women,
currently it consists of five women, four photographers and one painter/sculptor:
shiloh burton, Brett Fisher, Victorial Heilweil, Rysaac Lane, and Paige Tuhey.
