Video Symphony
Sequence to Simultaneity: Body Motion, Tech Motion
Opening

At Ego Park Gallery -- Fridy, June 4th, 2004, we explore the harmonizing of
video image. Deniz Demirer and Alex Killough, Bay Area installationists, are
challenging dead Russian film master Tarkovskys notion that a person is quite
simply not capable of watching several actions at once; it is beyond
psychophysiology.

Demirer and Killough have assembled a polyscreened (5 image/action) climax
to accent the path a visitor takes through corresponding moving images within
the gallery. Viewers will examine increasingly complex visual harmonies as
they traverse the gallery space. Images are seen initially on split single channel
screens and on still photos. Are the naked Pagans in tune? Are the motions of
their bodies aligned with the motion of the technology recording them? Is a
perceiver capable of discerning even mildly disharmonized video images (like a
bad lip synch)?

Moving through the gallery visitors are primed perceptually. They encounter
video harmonies in twos, threes, and fours. Sometimes brutally manipulated,
sometimes out of synch, sometimes in perfect 'pitch'. The images advance
towards the final 5 screen, 5 person, 5 camera orchestra, where the viewer is
capable of interactively tuning the 5 projections.

As with music, the in-tune nature of video is perceived on an intuitive,
subconscious level. A dissonance in the video images, is similar to a
dissonance in music and can be felt by observers. The nudes depicted in the
projections (Pagans) each have an instrument: a video camera. Each of the
Pagans points their respective cameras at one other Pagan, closing the circle. If
the image of a Pagan with a camera and the respective Pagan shooting that
Pagan are in synch and are displayed simultaneously, a consonant,
harmonious image is attained. The viewer has then directly disproven
Tarkovsky's conjecture through the creation of Visual Harmony and watching
several actions at once has become the feeling of one harmony.
