LISTENING TO THE PAST: ORAL HISTORY IN THE GLBT COMMUNITY

Panel at GLBT Historical Society about the crucial role that
oral history plays in preserving our past and informing the present.
Panelists Nan Alamilla Boyd, Cathy Cade, and Paul Cain will discuss
some of the challenges and rewards of conducting oral history in the
GLBT community, and share their thoughts about how oral history
provides particular and vital insights into our lives. The event,
which will run from 6:00-7:30 pm, is free and open to the public.

Nan Alamilla Boyd is Assistant Professor of Women's and Gender
Studies at Sonoma State University and a board member at the GLBT
Historical Society. Her recent book, Wide Open Town: A History of
Queer San Francisco to 1965, relies heavily on oral histories to
vividly recreate bar and drag life and create absorbing portraits of
central figures in the formative LGBT communities of the 1930s
through the 1960s.

Cathy Cade has been committed to radical social change for over 40
years,
transforming herself and her community. She has long been involved with
preserving oral histories of women's lives in the San Francisco lesbian
community.

Paul Cain is a Reno-based columnist and author of Leading the Parade:
Conversations with America's Most Influential Lesbians and Gay Men.
Using oral history, Cain traced the evolution of gay and lesbian
liberation
through the personal profiles and stories of nearly 40 individuals whose
daring efforts changed gay and straight America and their attitudes
toward
homosexuality.

The GLBT Historical Society is celebrating its 20th anniversary this
year.
The mission of the organization is to increase public understanding,
appreciation, and affirmation of the history and culture of gay,
lesbian,
bisexual, transgender and other sexual minority individuals and
communities.
