One hot step-mother, one hot step-son, one hot step to disaster! Directed by John Wilkins, Phaedra is about the cruelty of desire. It takes place in a hilariously hypnotic milieu of high finance, American decadence, youthful rebellion and seductive wealth. Today corporate dynasties are passing (Murdock, etc..) from the founders to their children by various wives. It is in just such a transition that Maguire's Phaedra unfolds, where powerful men get ruined, young love gets destroyed, and a little boy of 21 learns about a real woman's desire. A singular voice in American theater, and one of the most significant experimental playwrights in this country, Matthew Maguire's plays have a stylistic and intellectual range that is truly amazing. Part of the generation of playwrights that includes Len Jenkin, Mac Wellman and Eric Overmeyer, Maguire appears to rethink the entire process of theater every time he writes a play. He is the co-artistic director of the Creation Production Company, producers of over 47 new works for the stage. He has been an NEA playwrighting fellow and received both the Hammerstein and the McKnight fellowships. Phaedra runs Thurs.-Sat. and 8 pm and Sun. at 2 pm through November 13th.
