----/ The Squid List /-------------------------------------------------- Dawn of the Dead at Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In
Friday Oct 28th 8:00 PM Free! ----/ Event Description /----------------------------------------------- "What are they doing? Why do they come here?" "Some kind of instinct, memory of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives." Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In Presents DAWN OF THE DEAD with Preacher With An Unknown God Romero's masterpiece about cannibal zombies plaguing the world is set in a US shopping center, redefining the zombie so as to infect consumer identity. The popular perception of mindless consumers as zombie is owed strictly to Dawn of the Dead (1979), and extends far beyond the film's genre, demographics and era. This film - itself a commodity - has earned a place in the American imagination by undermining that very imagination's dependence on commodity culture. Dawn of the Dead locates the postmodern zombie historically in popular culture, creating a film that is a satire of what Romero calls 'the false security of consumer society'. The film itself becomes a commodity itself (one appropriated by the very consumer culture Romero sought to subvert), and is a master tale spawning 'rip- offs' and hybrids, and articulating all the while the parallels between Dawn's postmodern zombie and the North American consumer. Or in other words, the dead walk the earth, the days of the living are numbered, and we are scared shitless. Rico is hosting. With Preacher With An Unknown God.
