----/ The Squid List /-------------------------------------------------- Ask a Scientist - topic: Synthetic Sight
Wednesday, February 15th 7 - 9 pm Free ----/ Event Description /----------------------------------------------- This Month's Topic: Synthetic Sight Last year Dirk Trauner and colleagues at Berkeley did something really interesting: they reengineered a non-photosensitive nerve cell so that it could be turned on or off in response to light. Come find out how they did it and how their technique could eventually become the basis of a gene therapy for certain kinds of blindness. Says Trauner: "We're taking a basic building block of life and souping it up to do something it did not evolve to do. This is true synthetic biology." About the Series: Ask a Scientist is a new and different kind of lecture series. If you love watching Nova and reading Scientific American at the doctor's office, then this event is for you. Enjoy food, drinks, socializing, and conversation about the universe's most fascinating mysteries! http://www.askascientistsf.com/ ----/ Venue Info /------------------------------------------------------ Bazaar Cafe 5927 California St. (21st Ave) San Francisco 415-831-5620 http://www.bazaarcafe.com ----/ Additional Info /------------------------------------------------- [EMAIL PROTECTED] 415-751-5376 http://www.askascientistsf.com/ ----/ The Squid List Admin /--------------------------------------------- The Squid List, a tentacle of Laughing Squid http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/ subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address or change your subscription options: http://lists.laughingsquid.org/mailman/listinfo/squidlist/ Frequently Asked Questions & Submission Guidelines Squid List FAQ: http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/faq.html The Squid List Online Calendar: http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/calendar/ The Squid List RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/squidlist ----/ Laughing Squid /-------------------------------------------------- Laughing Squid http://laughingsquid.com underground art and culture from San Francisco and beyond Laughing Squid Web Hosting http://laughingsquid.net friendly, dependable and secure web hosting services for artists, individuals, bloggers, non-profits and small businesses The Squid List is licensed under a Creative Commons License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/
