----/ The Squid List /-------------------------------------------------- Beijing Bicycle and Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea
Friday May 19th 8:00 PM Free! ----/ Event Description /----------------------------------------------- A special showing: two amazing films with two great local organizations. Three, I guess, if you count us. Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In with the Santa Cruz Film Festival and Bike to Work Week Present A Double Feature BEIJING BICYCLE and PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA Friday May 19th, 8:00pm Santa Cruz Sentinel Parking Lot, Church Street, Downtown Beijing Bicycle is the single greatest movie about a boy losing his bike since Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Persistence pays off for a country boy Guei when he lands a coveted job as a bicycle messenger on the teaming streets of Beijing. The silver mountain bike he now rides will be his - once he earns 600 yuan. But just as he makes his final payment, the bicycle is stolen. Brought to you by Santa Cruz Bike To Work Week. Screening begins at 8ish. Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea is heartbreaking and beautiful, a bizarre portrait of perseverance amid environmental apocalypse. This extraordinary documentary provides a kitsch kaleidoscope view of what was pitched to '50s America as the new Palm Springs and the place to buy holiday homes. Now virtually abandoned and with a high salt content that leaves thousands of dead fish heaped up on the beach, Salton Sea is nonetheless home to some weird and wonderful characters who give us a peek at true Americana. Delightfully entertaining and fascinating, people such as 'Hunky Daddy' - the self- appointed mayor of Bombay Beach - splash vivid colors across the desert landscape of holiday's paradise lost. Director Chris Metzler may join us for a Q&A afterward. Brought to you by the Santa Cruz International Film Festival. Screening begins at 10ish. PLUS an introduction to bike culture and bike to work week, BRING lawn chairs, blankets, pillows, friends, drinks, & food to share for intermission. SANTA CRUZ GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theatre under the stars that springs up in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great movies and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is helping reclaim public space and transforming our urban environment into the joyful playground it should be. THE SANTA CRUZ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL May 5-11 '06 continues its mission to reach out to the film and digital media community around the world to further support the artists of today and the filmmakers of tomorrow. We offer these artists unique venues to present their individual brand of independent storytelling to an ever growing and enthusiastic audience. SANTA CRUZ COUNTY BIKE TO WORK/SCHOOL DAY is a community-wide effort, providing public education, and incentives to promote bike commuting. The Nineteenth Annual Santa Cruz County Spring Bike Week 2006 is May 13-21. Events include Rail & Trail Day, The Bicycle Trip's Bike Fest, commuter race, bike skills and maintenance classes and kids mountain bike ride through Wilder Ranch. And much more!
