INTERRUPTED LIFE:
INCARCERATED MOTHERS IN THE UNITED STATES*
a traveling public art installation

Of the 150,000 women in prison, 112,000 are mothers. Two-thirds of
these mothers have children under the age of 18.

The rate of incarceration for women has risen 400% since 1980 ¬
double the rate of men.

Hundreds of thousands of children are affected by the imprisonment of
their mothers. What's the effect on families? Can it be fixed when
the mother re-enters society? What are the support services to help
ease mothers and their children through this painful time? Does the
imprisonment of the mother tend to lead to future incarceration of
their kids?

Interrupted Life: Incarcerated Mothers in the United States a
beautiful and dramatic exhibition, provides a powerful occasion for
paying attention to the facts and experiences of incarceration in the
United States. Interrupted Life invites viewers to become educated,
active community members, searching for further information and
decent solutions to a major and growing problem in U.S. society.
National Curator: Rickie Solinger, historian

The Interrupted Life exhibit is the result of an exciting
collaboration between activists, artists, scholars and incarcerated
women and their families. Together with the Interrupted Life art
exhibit New College has partnered with community organizations for a
week long series of events related to issues of incarceration in the
U.S. The community organizations proudly helping to sponsor the art
exhibit and events include: Legal Services for Prisoners with
Children; California Coalition of Women Prisoners; Freedom Archives;
Free Battered Women; Modern Times Bookstore; Prison Desk of the
National Radio Project; Buildingbloc Arts Collective; Community
Initiatives Program of San Francisco Women Against Rape; Friends of
Marilyn Buck; Justice Now; Center for Children of Incarcerated
Parents; Prison Activist Resource Center; Books Not Bars; Baysic
