We were mad as hell when we found out that the newest Joyce Carol Oates novel, all 500 pages, was just a secret code that spells the phrase SCOOP YOUR DONKEY NOW. We were even madder when Douglas Coupland uuencoded an mp3 of himself gargling olive oil while singing Purple Rain, and then published the uuencode file as a book. Books should be opaque to the reader and not have any hidden meaning! That's why all of the proceeds from next week's Writers With Drinks will go to the Committee Against 128-Bit Lit. Together we can stop books from containing secret messages! Joining us in this quest are: - Hillary Carlip, author of Queen of the Oddballs and creator of FreshYarn.com. She once encrypted her own brain waves and it took weeks to find the right PGP key. - Rabih Alameddine, author of Kool Aids and I, The Divine. He experimented with subliminal messages in his books but has sworn off them. - Susan Browne, winner of the Four Way Books Intro Prize in Poetry. For a year everything she said made sense backwards and forwards, but now she only talks in one direction. - Lisa Montanarelli, whose erotic stories include Vegan Lesbian Boarding School Hookers In Bondage. She was responsible for the two- month subtext outage in Los Angeles. - Samantha Chanse, who's performed at the SF Comedy Club. She wiped out the practice of having hidden messages in laugh tracks. - Lori Ann White, whose stories appeared in Asimovs and Analog.
