  I've just looked at their website... and from the requirements
  alone, I'm going to say that openwebmail doesn't even use IMAP, but
  does in fact access the mail files directly. This is what is
  allowing the files to be accessed from any location on the server.
  Unfortuntely SM doesn't do this, although a couple of people have
  asked for direct Maildir/mbox access via SM... which would be the
  feature you're asking for.

  I think devel is more likely to ever have this implemented than
  stable due to devel's dynamic back end support... or at least that
  is how the developers are working it towards anyway.

  You're probably right. Unfortunately UW isn't very flexible in terms
  of configuration or settings, and you have to edit source code
  itself... so if you want to make that kind of change... it'll be a
  permanent change until you recompile ;)
