  Chris has recently been working on SSL/imaps recently with the devel
  branch of SquirrelMail.  I believe his changes are currently in the
  development branch of SquirrelMail but it has some certain
  requirements, like the mhash libraries, and PHP 4.3.x.  He posted an
  email to the devel list a couple of days ago, his post can be seen

  Hope this helps a little.

  Just as a point, if you have imap and SquirrelMail running on the
  same server, I don't think you have to worry about SSL, but you may
  want to still consider https for apache and squirrelmail so login
  and data isn't sent as plain text between the end user and the web
  server.
