I think I am using the core mail filter plugin.

Yes, thats what is happening. Then I guess its not a server side filter. I
tried avelsieve but that does not work for me- I get this message :
"Could not log on to timsieved daemon on your IMAP server ****.
Please contact your administrator."
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
