I was just about to reply with the same suggestion.  Just download the
tarball, untar it, run the configure script and you're off and running in
less than 3 minutes.  To make life even easier you could just uninstall
the Debian package and then put the tarball where ever Debian put SM that
way you shouldn't have to change your Apache configuration (or even
restart it?) and then you should be good to go.
