I just installed SquirrelMail 1.2.10. I'm able to access the login page, but I get the following message aftering entering a valid user name and password:

Error opening ../data/default_pref
Default preference file not found or not readable!

My Web Server is Apache 2.0.43 and I'm running PHP 4.2.3. Apache is running as nobody/nogroup and permissions are currently as follows:

[root@bellux mail]# ls -lR data
data:
total 8
-rw-rw-rw- 1 nobody nogroup 82 Mar 8 2001 default_pref
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nogroup 469 Dec 23 2001 index.php

Note that I change the permissions while I'm trying to solve this problem. Also note that I've temporarily removed the .htaccess file while trying to solve this problem. $data_dir in config/config.php is "../data/".

What did I miss?

P.S. No, I didn't search the archives but it wasn't for lack of trying... every search I tried at Sourceforge just sits there for 5+ minutes and does nothing and gmane appears to ignore the underscore so the results are useless. Do you know how many times the word "default" appears in a list archive?

Thanks for any and all help in solving my access problem.

Brenda
