Why don't you use qmail's 'native' Maildir delivery instead of mbox? It's more 
reliable and you can use courier-imap.

We use a combination of qmail/vmailmgr/courier-imap/squirrelmail and it works 
fine. I think there's a howto which shows you how to setup those packages so 
that they work with each other -- google for it.
