I think this may have been the point where we were crossing wires.

I've yet to run into the lack of inode issue... I, in fact, have a
large number or mails, I've not checked the count in a while, but last
time one particular mail folder had 21,000 emails in (or there
abouts). I still fine Maildir a lot faster access than mbox based on a
similar folder size.
