I am experiencing the same situation as Deurk.
My settings are:
Server Side Sorting? off
Server Side Threading? off
Folder Threading? off
Sorted by? Date

Jonathan:

What is selectable on your top message?  "Delete and Next" or "Delete and
Previous"?    And then when you delete the top message what is selectable?
