I might be wrong, but this sounds like a sendmail config issue.  Do this,
see what you get.

/usr/lib/sendmail -d0.4  xxx < /dev/null

This should show you the canonical name and other system identity
information which might give you a clue as to what's wrong, then you can
update your sendmail.cf accordingly.

Also, when you changed your hostname, are you sure you got
everything?  you don't mention what OS, but the method of changing
hostnames varies from OS to OS.
