In regards to this, I was able to correct the problem by specifying the FQDN of the imap server, instead of using localhost.  (Shouldn’t make much of a difference because the imap server is on the localhost).

Haven’t experienced this problem with older versions of Squirrelmail.  A bug in 1.4, perhaps?

Anyway, thought I would post this in the event that someone else experiences this same problem.

Thanks.

Subject: Protocol not supported

Hey all,

Every so often when sending off a message via Compose, Reply or Forward, we get the following error message:

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: php_hostconnect: connect failed in /www/webmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 227

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to localhost:143 in /www/webmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 227

ERROR

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.

43 : Protocol not supported

Go to the login page

This error does not happen anywhere else but when clicking the Send button on an outgoing e-mail.  The outgoing mail actually does make it through the SMTP server and gets delivered normally.  It seems this error is generated from trying to re-connect to the IMAP folder.  Anyone have any ideas?

FreeBSD 4.8, Courier-IMAP 1.7.3,  Squirrelmail 1.4.0, Qmail 1.03

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
