BTW uw-imapd does have an alternative mailbox format which may scale better; however if you change formats you will need to look at procmail and probably sendmail to ensure they are modified to support the new format. I'd try it out on a test box first to make sure you have all the steps down. Google the archives for details its been discussed in some detail before.
