Use SquirrelMail 1.4.1 CVS. There were a lot of performance related fixes. Performance issues should be history :) It could be possible that it's quicker then the 1.2.x branche. At least that was the intention.
If you tried it and compared the versions and can confirm the performance did in fact raise then feel free to report it to the list so others can try the 1.4.1 CVS version too.
