Try checking to see if you have cookies disabled in Firebird. If you

It's your IMAP server. SquirrelMail cannot guess any characters
extended past the 8 character mark, so your IMAP server is accepting
passwords at a shorter length. I suggest testing your IMAP server, as
it's likely to be the culprit. The interesting thing is somebody
reported a similar issue a couple of months ago, he'd set his password
to a long string, but it'd accept anything after the third character
for the password.
