I tried tried to provide a wrong user and got the mentioned warning,
so this seems to work. Back to existing user&password and no
complaints anymore ...

Well, here it comes: RedHat Linux 7.3; PHP 4.3.2; PEAR came with PHP
package ... Don't know how to check version; Squirrelmail 1.4.0

PostgreSQL is up&running, perl & pear access test scripts run
successfully;

Database vor squirrelmail created as mail; user created as mail.
granted select,delete,insert,reference permissions;

It's a new setup, no migration of previous anything.
