SquirrelMail merely communicates with your IMAP server. Your IMAP server is what accesses the maildir/mailbox directly... so, you should work on configuring it correctly. If you post info about the IMAP server here, there is usually someone who can help, but really, that is off topic and should be posted in a forum specific to that IMAP server.
