SM doesn't search for any such thing. It uses the IMAP protocol to interrogate the server. Now, UW-IMAP offers a range of different mailbox formats. With some of them you can have folders that contain mail or folders that contain other folders but not both. With others you can have folders that contain both mail and folders.
