[SM-USERS] OT: LDAP protocol error on RH8/9

This is making me nuts: the LDAP search in SM 1.4.x works like a charm on 
my OS X box and with V1.2.1 on the IIS and OS X boxes. But on RH 8 or 9, 
using the LDAP services of Exchange 5.5, I constantly get this error:
Your search failed with the following error(s): [IUCN Global Email List] 
Protocol error

I cannot figure out what is causing this. Is there any chance it has to do 
with the version of OpenLDAP on the RH boxes?
