Your guesses are good.  Keep going with it.  I know nothing about
vpopmail, but I believe it has a password facility that you can wire
into the first of your choices.  There are email threads in the archives
of the plugins list (or possibly users list) about doing exactly that.
If vpopmail doesn't mind you bypassing its services and you know the
structure of your MySQL database, the 2nd of your choices will work fine
for you too.
